In May 1995, a handful of Unitarian Universalists meeting in homes soon grew to 20 people hosting their services at a local retirement community. By August of 1996, this group learned a Danville Presbyterian church had recently disbanded and the building was for sale – having been the only occupants since it was built in 1884. They purchased the building where the Unitarian Universalist Community Church of Hendricks County continues to meet today.

Our organizing minister was the Rev. Ed Harris, Minister Emeritus of All Souls Unitarian Church of Indianapolis. Ed presented us with our first “singing bowl” which we still use in worship and meditation today.

Other ministers have joined us throughout the years on contract, part-time, settled, called, interim, and in nearly every variation the UU church has to offer. The UU ministers who have contributed their services include:

None of our ministers have served in a full-time capacity, due to the size or income of the church. Although we are very proud to own our church property free and clear of a mortgage, and we manage an endowment that supports our church community, income to support full-time staff has not yet been our model.

Throughout its history, our church has been governed by a Board of Directors. We consider ourselves a lay-led congregation and lean into the UU tradition that spiritual leadership belongs to all members.
