In the coming year, our community celebrates 30 years as the Unitarian Universalist Community Church of Hendricks County. Founding members met for about a year in the Brownsburg area, then incorporated as UUCCHC in August 1996, closed on the purchase of our current church home in September and held the first service in November the same year.
To recognize this moment, we are planning a number of events throughout the year to honor the work of our church, the members who make this community special, those who have gone before us, as well as our friends in the wider community. The celebration begins Dec. 31 at midnight and will continue through the 12 months of 2026.
Throughout the last three decades, our church has made a lasting impact on people in Hendricks County though initiatives such as an all-denominational Underwear Drive supplying garments to those in need; Christmas Day Dinner where members delivered a fresh, hot meal to hundreds of homes on Christmas morning; the annual LGBTQ rally on the square that continued until marriage equality was made legal; and so much more. Whether it’s through a national undertaking such as Guest at Your Table or a local initiative supporting the Shared Blessings Food Pantry, UUCCHC members have been champions of helping others.
Our church community has been the incubator for several long-lasting programs and organizations, serving as a location where like-minded people come together in shared values. Members of UUCCHC helped found the McCloud Nature Park, the Alliance for Diversity, Hendricks County Pride and Family Promise. Our members have served and continue to lead organizations throughout the county in social justice, the arts, education, advocacy and politics. Through service and ethical living rooted in Unitarian Universalist ideals, the church continues to contribute to a stronger, more compassionate Hendricks County.
As we ring in the new year, we will mark the moment of 30 years of community, compassion and service at the Unitarian Universalist Community Church of Hendricks County 30 joyful chimes of our historic church bell. All are welcome to join starting at 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 31 for a toast to our future. Come sip some hot cocoa or bubbly and help ring out the news of our anniversary year to the community.
At our first service of the New Year on Jan. 4, join us for a celebration honoring one of our charter members, who is an integral part of our congregation today: Steve Cassity. Help us celebrate Steve and his supportive work with UUCCHC for the last three decades during a special recognition in the service. You can look forward to seeing and hearing from more charter members each month, while learning about our church history and impact.
Here’s to honoring our past, celebrating our present, and stepping boldly into the next chapter together.
