Recognizing the Climate Problem

Hello Hendricks County Residents, we made it through the hottest summer on record.
The extreme heat, combined with other weather phenomena, contributed to this summer’s
epic ocean storms, wildfires, flooding, and droughts. Experts warn that continued
burning of fossil fuels will result in temperatures that break this year’s heat records,
which have imposed widespread health and economic costs. To return to the cooler
temperatures of the 1950’s and 1960’s, we must stop producing CO2 (carbon dioxide).
Without action to reduce the use of fossil fuels, the temperatures, extreme weather
events, droughts, and rising sea levels will continue. As a parent, we must realize that
our children, our grandchildren, and future generations will never enjoy many of the
benefits that we enjoyed during our childhoods, including the more moderate
temperatures and environments, and even the coastlines that we enjoyed in our youth.
As stewards of our environment, it’s our obligation to dramatically reduce the use of
fossil fuel now! Then, we still must figure out how to best remove the CO2 that we
have allowed to build up in the atmosphere. That is a topic for a later discussion.
