We will have Ms. Margo McAlear of Compassion & Choices of Indiana here to provide information to the public on end-of-life options and the conversations surrounding them. The discussion will include adult education concerning aging well, and engagement in important issues about a life well-lived.

The presentation & conversation will include the following topics:

  • Advance Directives – what they are, why they are so important, why only a third of people have them, and what specific steps individual’s need to take for self-determination in their healthcare. This part also includes why conversations about our end of life are so difficult and how to begin these with our families and loved ones.
  • Conversations with Doctors– helping people develop a list of questions for their doctors to ensure they are fully informed of treatment options. This part is about tailoring medical treatment to what is most important to the individual and how to facilitate conversations.
  • Medical Aid-in-Dying – This currently exists in ten jurisdictions in the U.S. It is an additional option for persons with a terminal diagnosis with two doctors saying they will probably die within six months or less. MAID allows the person to request a prescription for drugs that they take themselves to end their lives peacefully and compassionately at a time of their choosing. It’s just one option of many that already exist such as Hospice, palliative sedation, voluntarily stopping eating and drinking, etc. This can be controversial but we respect every individual’s choice to use such an option or not.
  • We want to educate the public about this legislation in Indiana so that they can tell their state legislators what they think about it, -whether they support it or not.

The presentation lasts about 45-60 minutes, including questions & answers.  The goal is to educate, and through this education, empower.  We will have refreshments and may continue discussions so that everyone has their questions answered.

This seminar will be held in the sanctuary and is open to everyone, church members and the community. This is non-denominational.

This seminar has been well received throughout Indiana. We hope you will attend.  Please RSVP so that we can gauge attendance. Forward questions to:  uucchc.cat@gmail.com

  1. This presentation is actually February 2 NOT the 22. I look forward to meeting all who come and will have helpful and informative handouts that you can take home.

  2. This date for this event is actually February 2, not Feb. 22. The time is the same- 11:45. I will have some interesting handouts that you can take home on ideas for your advance directives or addenda to ones you already have, as well as more information on Medical Aid in Dying.
